Preservation in Centre County

Back to List

Category A - B - C - D

Category D includes all of those sites which are still active. This does not mean that they are not historically important. Many of these are older, larger grounds with much to add to the historical worth of Centre County's burial sites.

However, with an active caretaker, and as an active burial site, care must be taken when dealing with the sacredness that some impose upon the grounds. These are, after all, still cemeteries and serve a function far greater than the historical reading of what is there on a material level.

For many of these, I have included nothing under the Preservation Recommendation heading in the Burial Information List. this is primarily because I feel that all work which goes on in such sites is the primary responsibility of the legal caretakers and the families who own plots and the descendants of the interred.

This is not to suggest that they are ignored. As in Category C, there will be information at the Centre Furnace Mansion regarding preservation and conservation. Many of this information is more than applicable to some of the older sites such as Union in Bellfonte. Also these sites, again such as Union, may occasionally find themselves in need of volunteers due to finances or due to the aftermath of a vandalism incident. Hopefully, at these times, the Adopt-A-Cemetery Project may at the very least be able to supply a list of possible volunteer groups and individuals to assist these sites with their needs.
