2011 Annual Meeting & Historic Preservation Awards

Each year, the Centre County Historical Society recognizes the various individuals and groups for their outstanding work in helping preserve and interpret Centre County's history. Nominees were presented certificates at the Annual Meeting and Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony. This year's ceremony was held on Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. at the Centre Furnace Mansion.

On behalf of the Centre County Historical Society (CCHS), our warmest appreciation is extended to everyone who attended the Annual Meeting and Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony at the Centre Furnace Mansion. Approximately 50 people joined in the ceremony and subsequent reception. Each year since 1988, CCHS has recognized various individuals and groups from the community for their outstanding work in helping preserve and interpret Centre County's history - totaling more than 157 awards through the years. 

The recipients of the 2011 Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation are: 

  • Exhibit Committee of “Those Who Came Before:   The Archaeology of Centre County’s Native Americans” – Members:  Melissa Diamanti, Bob Donaldson, Mary Alice Graetzer, Jackie Melander, Clair Milner, Mary Sorensen, and Kellie Waksminski. 
  • Elwood Homan and Family – Bucher Ayres House & Farmstead in Ferguson Township. 
  • John and Catherine Smith – Chicory Lane Farm in Gregg Township. 
  • Howard T. “Jim” Davy – Author, Monument – All Company Towns Ain’t Bad – The Story of a Remote Mountain Community and Its People.  Monument is in present-day Liberty Township. 
  • Rod and Rhonda Beard – First National Bank Building, Bellefonte. 

This year, several businesses and organizations are being recognized for their significant contributions to CCHS and its historic properties through materials, equipment, and labor.  The 2011 Service Awards were presented to: 

  • Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. – Installation of a water line at Boogersburg School. 
  • Stone Valley Construction, Inc. – Water line repair at Centre Furnace Mansion. 
  • Boy Scouts of America, Troop 367 – Eagle Scout Projects:  Pedestrian bridge and trail at Boogersburg School; and Landscape planting at Centre Furnace Mansion.
  • Dave Horner & Associates, Inc. – Exterior painting projects at Centre Furnace Mansion.

Of all the programs that the Historical Society oversees, from gardens and archives, to site tours and special events for hundreds of guests, these would not be possible without the tireless efforts of hundreds of volunteers.  This year, six volunteers were given special recognition for their many contributions to CCHS: 

  • Cliff Bastuscheck – For service as a docent and volunteer who fills in for tours, field trips, and events.
  • Cathy Horner –For service as a docent, principal researcher, and Stocking Stuffer co-chairperson.
  • Beverly Lipski – For service on the Centre Furnace Mansion Garden Committee since 2000.
  • Gloria Nieweg – For service as a docent and her love and gift for teaching demonstrated in work with school field trips at Centre Furnace Mansion and Boogersburg School.
  • Mary Osborn – For service as docent coordinator, Stocking Stuffer co-chairperson, wonderful baker, and for her countless hours of volunteerism in the Centre Furnace Mansion.
  • Carol Phillips – For service in developing educational materials, and planning and caring for the Kitchen Garden at the Centre Furnace Mansion

Special thanks to John Ziegler and Bob Hazelton for following up on Preservation Award nominations during the past year, and for putting this year's program together. And thanks also go to Pam Calkins, Katie Frieden, Mary Osborn, Jackie and Gene Melander, Mary Sorensen, and Megan Orient for helping with set up, food and reception clean-up.
